The Worshipful Company of Farriers
650 Years of Care for the Horse
Added 17th May 2006

The year 2006 may well be the 157th edition of the Moorgreen Country Show but it also marks the 650th aniversary of The Worshipful Company of Farriers. The show is celebrating the occasion by awarding a Best Show Horse prize.

On March 27th, 1356, the Lord Mayor of London called together the leading farriers of the City and instructed them to form a Guild in order to ensure the protection of the horse from bad shoeing.

From then until the present day the Worshipful Company of Farriers has been responsible for the standards of farrierty in this country and was instrumental in the passing of the Farriers Registration Act 1975 that requires all farriers to be registered. It is illegal to shoe a horse unless registered under this Act.

In order to become registered a farrier must serve a four year apprenticeship and pass examinations set by the Company. This is known as the Diploma and a farrier becomes a DipWCF.

There are also two higher examinations; Associate (AWCF) and Fellowship (FWCF) and farriers who hold these are the most highly qualified in the world.

The Company does its best to involve everyone concerned with the welfare of the horse to secure the highest possible standards. One part of this is the award system. Farriery, Shoemaking and Best Shod Horse Awards are made at shows and events around the country to help improve standards and raise awareness.

Horse owners are urged to have a good relationship with their farrier and to talk to him, or her, about the work they intend to do with their horse and any concerns they have. Farriers are highly skilled professionals and are equally concerned for the animals they hold so dear.

In addition to the Awards, the Company runs courses and seminars for farriers to further enhance their skills and the Liverymen of the Company also sit on a number of committees which are concerned with equine matters and rural affairs in general.

The city of London has over 100 Livery Companies that all began as Guilds concerned witht their specific trade. Howaver, the Company is justifiably proud that it is probably the last to still have direct responsibility for its craft and through that, a major role in the welfare of the horse.
