The Art of Floral Art
Added 5th June 2006
Floral Art is likened to painting a picture, something to enjoy. In this article for newcomers to the art, renowned floral artist Marie Lowe, who is a Director of the Show and Chairman of the Horticultural Committee, explains how to set about achieving this picture.
Firstly, visit the local library. There are many good books on the subject. Most will tell you about equipment needed, but a word of advice - good Floral Art scissors are essential. Whilst in the library see if Floral Art evening or day classes are listed in your area, these can be excellent as good ground work.
Walk through parks and woodlands. Observe flowers, shrubs and trees both in the winter and summer seasons. Also look for colour and texture.
During the summer months many competitive shows are held some at a high level but village events can be an excellent introduction to the competitive world as they often put on sample designs.
But remember, you can also enter beginner's classes at major shows. You will learn so much on the show bench. Never be afraid to enter. If in doubt go along and visit the shows, talk to the competitors and organisers, they're usually very friendly and keen to encourage new blood.
